Let Go and Let God: Learning to Let God Control the Storm
August 10, 2026
Main Scripture
“And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”
— Mark 4:39, KJV
Morning Reflection
There are storms in life that cannot be controlled by trying harder. Fear, doubt, uncertainty, pain, and unanswered questions can begin to feel like a hurricane inside us. For so long, my instinct has been to protect myself by finding answers, watching closely, working harder, and trying to stop the storm before it can hurt me.
But I am learning something different: the storm keeps becoming stronger when I believe I have to control it. God is teaching me that peace does not require me to know everything or control everything. I can acknowledge that a storm exists without allowing fear to become the captain of my boat.
“The storm always wins because I try to stop it on my own. Now I am trying to learn to let God control the storm.”
Digging Deeper
In Mark 4, the disciples were terrified because their boat was filling with water while Jesus slept. They could see the waves. They could feel the wind. Their fear was real. Yet Jesus had never left the boat.
God’s quietness does not mean God’s absence. There may be moments when I wonder, “God, do You see this? Why aren’t You stopping it?” But He is still present. He sees what I cannot see, knows what I do not know, and understands every part of my heart.
I also do not have to interpret every painful thing that happens as punishment. Scripture shows that suffering is not a simple equation where something terrible happens because God is punishing someone. God can teach me through suffering without having sent the suffering as punishment.
What God Is Teaching Me
I do not have to figure everything out today.
I cannot control another person’s choices, but I can choose how I respond.
I can observe reality, keep healthy boundaries, and still refuse to let fear rule me.
God can reveal truth in His time.
I do not have to prevent every possible hurt in order to be safe with God.
Surrender is not giving up. It is giving God what was never mine to control.
Let Go and Let God
Let go of what I cannot control.
Let God handle what I cannot see.
Let go of needing every answer today.
Let God reveal truth in His time.
Let go of believing I must prevent every possible hurt.
Let God give me strength for whatever tomorrow brings.
He Knows Me and He Loves Me
God does not love me because I have everything together. He knows my anger, my mistakes, my fears, my doubts, the times I have tried to control everything, and the times I have picked a burden back up after giving it to Him. There is nothing hidden in me that He will someday discover.
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
— 1 Peter 5:7, KJV
Surrender may have to happen more than once. If I give something to God and pick it back up an hour later, I can give it back again. I am not failing because letting go is difficult. I am learning how to let go.
Today’s Prayer
Father,
The storm feels bigger than me, and I am tired of trying to control the wind. You know every fear, every question, and every uncertainty inside me. Help me trust that You are in the boat with me even when I cannot see what You are doing.
Teach me what belongs to me and what belongs to You. Give me wisdom for the things I need to face, courage for the boundaries I need to keep, and peace about the things I cannot control. When I pick my worries back up, remind me that I can place them in Your hands again.
God, You take the storm. I will hold onto You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
